I wrote more than 35 episodes for two of BBC TV’s long-running, award winning series dramas: BBC TV's Doctors and EastEnders over fifteen plus years.
Doctors is a medical drama series with each episode featuring a story-of-the-day woven into serial storylines. The writer’s challenge is to find resonance between their own guest story and the regular character story lines. The solution is to develop guest stories where the medical angle is a set up to uncover and explore the tangled relationships between the writer’s guest characters.
EastEnders is the BBC's flagship soap opera and fights for the top spot as the UK’s most popular soap. Much like the full English breakfast, EastEnders is a national institution. It features the tangled lives and loves of families living in a fictional square in the East End of London, together with a fair smattering of lovable and not-so-lovable rogues. As a writer, I had to weave together four or five serial storylines into a 30 minute episode.
This varied TV scriptwriting experience means on other projects I can:
• Write in different character voices, styles, genres and tones
• Create my own characters or work with existing characters
• Use my well-honed sense of story and structure
• Execute multiple drafts of scripts and do quick turnarounds
