Producing ‘HOARDERS’

Field Producing / Story Producing

Casting Producing

FIELD PRODUCING

This is one of the most meaningful jobs I have ever done, because these shows can change people’s lives. By the conclusion of the shoot, the main character is often on a pathway to better health with a clean house and a vision of a better future, while fractured family relationships are starting to heal.

I have field produced this show 20+ times on 7-9 days shoots with 3 camera, 2 audio and 'B' Producer and 2 PAs.

Primary skills:
• Scheduling and managing each day’s shoot
• Directing crew and cameras
• Conducting interviews

Other skills:

• Working under intense time pressure
• Collaboration with other crew members
• Thinking on my feet
• Adapting to constantly changing situations
• Using an intuitive story sense to shape the story as it unfolds

STORY PRODUCING / WRITING

I have worked on 59 episodes of ‘Hoarders’, including 45 x 1 hour episodes and latterly 14 x 2 hour episodes creating the rough cut, which is then passed to the editor to add music, special effects, titles and the finessing of broll footage.

Skills:
• Intuitive sense of how to build a story, including character, structure and story arcs
• Ability to focus tightly on the clearest, most powerful story from sifting through 50+ hours of footage
• Crafting cliffhangers and powerful endings to acts
• Video editing skills on Avid Media Composer (also I know Adobe Premiere)

CASTING

A couple of first pages of pitches (with names and faces blurred)

Casting Producing involves:

• Strong, intuitive sense of story
• Evaluating stories to find those with strong crises, stakes and family dynamics
• Conducting phone interviews of subjects and their family with sensitivity
• Writing a compelling 10 page pitch to persuade the network to green light the show
